Homemade Foundation
Yuck, I hate makeup. I mean, I like looking nice... but I'm not willing to put in the time, spend the money, or actually learn how to do makeup. But, I do wear it, almost every day. But just the bare minimum.
All that to say that this is not a makeup tutorial :) Nope, the purpose of this post is to share my excitement about a recipe for a homemade foundation that I LOVE - Wellness Mama's recipe for natural liquid foundation. I've been looking at the recipe for awhile, but kept debating whether or not to spend the money on the mica powder. In the meantime, I scraped the last bits out of my broken jar of Mineral Fusion foundation (glass bits and all), then went back for the last drops of my Gabriel Organics foundation that caused me to break out.... then finally... I clicked "buy" and ordered my two containers of mica powder.
And I've been using this foundation ever since! My mom and sister decided to join me on this last batch I made and they are now hooked as well.
Now if you aren't already one of those DIY people and need some convincing, let me briefly explain why I wanted to make my own foundation.
First, I am extremely careful about what goes in and on my body. I try to avoid chemicals whenever I'm in control. That means I'm very careful about what I put in my body. Any time I need to buy a new product I do some serious investigating on Environmental Working Group's website. When I need to buy makeup, I search their Skin Deep Cosmetics Database for the cleanest possible options. They rate products on a 1 to 10 scale based on ingredients. I am looking for a 1 whenever possible.... but that's hard! Especially for foundation... I realized that none of my 1 options were available in stores (and were quite expensive online). I tried a few pretty good products... but they just didn't work for my skin and it really bothered me that I was putting questionable ingredients on my skin... hence the search for a homemade foundation. So if you are still debating, enter your makeup into EWG's Skin Deep Cosmetics Database and see what you are really slathering on your skin every day.
Second, homemade foundation is cheaper in the long run. I've posted about my favorite ingredients before, and two of the ingredients in the makeup were already on that list. So I only had to buy a few more ingredients. And these ingredients have many additional uses and last a long time.
Third, it gives you the ability to customize your color. We've already established that I'm not great with makeup, so that means that I'm pretty horrible at picking the right shade. But now with homemade makeup, I can change and refine the color constantly.
So let's get started.
INGREDIENTS
- Lotion base of choice (I love Shea Moisture)
- Zinc oxide powder
- Bentonite clay
- mica powders (in your choice of colors, I used classic gold & bronze)
- Cacao powder
DIRECTIONS
Put lotion in your choice of container. Add zinc oxide and bentonite clay until you get your desired coverage. Add color (cacao powder and mica powders) little by little, test, and refine some more until your get your perfect color.
For more detailed directions, check Wellness Mama's recipe for natural liquid foundation.
BTW, I love to use the mica powders as eye shadow too.
Ahhh, enjoy :)
